About
We live in a world with massive inequality, oppression, endless wars, and an environmental crisis so extreme that we are at the start of a mass extinction. There is no way out of this death spiral without challenging and moving beyond the system that created it. At the heart of the capitalist system is the endless drive for profit. All other considerations are secondary. That is why world leaders have avoided acting on the climate crisis after decades of warnings from scientists and environmental movements. That is why wages and working conditions are driven down while billionaires plan journeys to Mars. It’s why imperialist powers like the US enter into endless wars seeking to control access to valuable resources like fossil fuels. It’s why generations of women have been exploited for unpaid domestic labour and why the fight for equal pay continues. It’s why Māori land was stolen and continues to be exploited for profit. The need to maintain control over stolen land is why Māori are subjected to racist policing and targeted by state interference such as in the Oranga Tamariki scandal.
We can all imagine a better world. We can all think of what it would be like to have the freedom and democratic power to make the most important decisions for ourselves and our communities. The choices we would make as a society seem obvious. End fossil fuels, end the exploitation of both people and the land, treat everyone in society equally, put an end to war. This is possible if we build a world that puts people, not profit, at the heart of society. We need to build a socialist society that is democratic from the bottom up. We need a democracy that empowers people to make the social and economic decisions that effect everyone.
The International Socialist Organisation Aotearoa is dedicated to building the movement for that socialist society. We are revolutionaries because we recognise that democracy under capitalism prevents the possibility of going beyond capitalism. We are for a democracy of the people, in the interests of the people, not in the interests of billionaires. To create that democratic socialist society the working class needs to be organised. That’s why we are building an organisation that learns from history, uses tools developed by generations of Marxists, develops theory for the present moment and tests those ideas in today’s movements.
